Who can quickly summarize law perspective on life jacket / PFD (USCGA PFD?) for wind sports applications like windsurfing/kiting/wingfoiling? What about surfing/SUP and assisted (battery powered prop) downwind foiling?
https://www.windvisions.com/PFD.pdf
Found good article stating pros and cons of PFD use but for means of conversation with DNR curious about factual law view on it. |

I have been ticketed for SUPing without a pfd. It seems they have pretty broad remit to require one on the water with any recreational equipment. For mere swimming, no pfd is necessary. _________________ Sometimes you eat the bar, sometimes the bar eats you |

Oregon.
Sailboards are exempt. (a modified surfboard having a mast mounted on a universal joint and sailed by one person standing up).
SUP you must wear one if it's over 10 feet long.
Kiteboards and wing boards are not mentioned. The cutoff seems to be 10 feet in length - over 10 a sup is considered a boat - a pfd is required. Under 10 it's not.
I've never heard of anyone hassled or ticketed for kiting or winging or e-foil without a pfd.

itd be maybe interesting to hear the thinking on why 10ft is the line. seems like bigger would be safer, but, im also not trying to get any more rules to follow. |

my understanding - you are required to have a pfd on a SUP over 10' but dont have to wear it - i tuck a minimum orange one in the front - same with kayak to be legal
jetski you are required to wear it
(the whistle is another requirement)
Have a properly-fitted life jacket, sound-producing device such as a whistle, and a Waterway Access Permit if the SUP is 10 feet or longer.
Waterway Access Permits are required for boats 10 feet and longer
if the surf is over 15' - it can be nice to have a pfd kitesurfing - espescially halfway thru the second hour of swimming, you tend to question the ommision _________________ Go Deep!
